Early Intervention: A Simple Guide for New Jersey Families

Early Intervention at a Glance:


What:

A service to address developmental delays.


Who:

For children from birth to 3 years.


When:

Services can be started anytime before the age of 3 years. Services will typically discontinue at 3 years old and additional services may be possible.


Where:

According to the New Jersey Early Intervention System, services may take place in a child's natural setting, such as the child's home, child care setting, or another approved location.


What to Do If You Have Concerns:

  1. Pause and take a breath.

  2. See helpful child-development resources:

    1. NJ Early Intervention Child-Development Brochure

    2. CDC Milestone Checklist (English and other languages)

  3. Write down what you have noticed.

  4. Schedule an appointment with your child's pediatrician to discuss your concerns.
